Rebecca has very complex needs and she grew up isolated from normal society because she spent all of her early life in a special school and at home. Rebecca cannot use speech to communicate and had some physical restrictions that prevent her from going out on her own and making friends. This meant that by Rebecca’s late teenage years, she was frustrated and as a family we felt guilty at the lack of social life that Rebecca had so the decision was made to do something about it.
We did not know how to go about this until we came across the process of setting up a microboard and person centered planning. Initially we where skeptical if things would really change but decided to give it a go.
The microboard works on the basis of a commitment of a small group of people in Rebecca’s life.
